This is a review of a restaurant located in Winston Salem called Mizu. Last Saturday, July 4th, we decided to give it a try. After being seated, we noticed that their sanitation score was 90. I usually walk out if a restaurant is under 92 especially if I'm going to order sushi, but we decided to stay since not all restaurants were open on the 4th of July.

We decided to start with an appetizer of sushi to share and I chose the Robinhood Roll which sounded like something we had never tried before. It was delivered to the table in about fifteen minutes. It is described as "fried sweet potato inside, lobster salad, red tobico on top with mango and coconut sauce". There were about four tiny pieces of sweet potato which were fried, wrapped with seaweed paper, rice and topped with the lobster salad, tobico and sauces. It was very sweet, while I enjoyed it, it's not something I would order again. I'll stick to spicy sushi from now on, but I'm glad I gave it a try.

Three minutes later our soup and salad came out. Hubby ordered the soup and I ordered the salad. The entrees come with your choice of soup or salad. Hubby enjoyed his soup and it came out at a temperature in which you could eat it right away. My salad was lacking in ingredients, it simply had lettuce most of which was iceberg and a couple of pieces of carrot and a slice of tomato. The dressing was ok, but next time if we go back I'd order the soup instead. I expected some cucumber, more carrot and some crunchy noodles on top.

Fourteen minutes later our entrees arrived. I was really looking forward to the Chicken Katsu since it's one of my favorites and I had it in nine months. So I was especially disappointed that my Chicken Katsu was not hot. By the time I finished eating, the chicken was barely warm. Hubby's Chicken Teriyaki had the same issue. Mind you the restaurant only had a few customers, so it must have just been sitting back there waiting for the waitress to bring it out and they didn't bother to call her to do so. That's a deal breaker for me, not receiving hot food. We may give it another try out of convenience if we are in the area, but otherwise this is the reason we will probably not return. Hubby wasn't crazy about the tempera, the california roll was good and the Shumai or Gyoza (not sure which he was served) was very unusual but good. The rice was average and I would have preferred a thicker piece of chicken so it had not been so dry. The konkatsu sauce was very good. Three very odd things appeared on my plate: the yellow crunchy thing on the top right, the salad with ranch dressing and a maraschino cherry. The menu indicated that the Chicken Katsu would be served with vegetables, so I was surprised to receive salad instead and with ranch dressing no less. Why ranch dressing? Why not ginger and why not ask the customer which they would like? The yellow things looked like mango but they were crunchy. I didn't take another bite and I passed on the cherry with my dinner since that's such an odd combo.

Thirty minutes later our dessert arrived. I decided I'd try Green Tea Mochi for the first time and share some with Hubby. I think they gave us a double portion on one plate instead. I liked the inner part but I didn't care for the gooey thick outer portion. I'm glad I gave it a try, but it's not something I would order again and Hubby agreed.

So the bill came and the total was around $50 prior to tipping. Service was quite attentive except when it was time to bring out the hot food on time. They were friendly, but I didn't enjoy being asked if I wanted to order by three different employees. This was our first visit so it took us quite sometime to review the menu and decide what to order, so that felt pushy. While we enjoyed our visit overall, we are not sure we will chose this restaurant again due to the lack of hot food and the ninety sanitation score. Our favorite Asian restaurant so far in the Triad is Hakka Chow. We have been there more times that I can count and I highly recommend their lovely restaurant.
