Birchbox Subscription Box Review - August 2015

This is a review of a monthly subscription box called Birchbox for $10 including shipping. I took break from subscribing from this box for over a year since I had a lot of samples that I had not used and I wasn't enjoying what they were sending me anymore. Since they improved the boxes lately and starting doing collaborations with celebrities & others and they also let you chose one of the samples, I decided to subscribe again. They have a reward system for writing reviews. So each month you earn 50 points for writing five sample reviews which is worth $5. Every 100 points earns you $10 worth of products in their store, which is a good deal.

This month I decided to chose the collaboration box which included products chosen by Nicole Richie. I liked most of what she chose, so I went with that rather than their mystery box. She has a reality comedy show on VH1 called Candidly Nicole on Wednesdays at 11 pm ET. If you enjoyed her show with Paris Hilton many years ago, you will enjoy this one also. Included in the box were the following products:
  1. Rene Furterer Paris - Lissea Leave In Smoothing Fluid, .5 fl oz, $3.41 retail value
  2. Dr. Brandt - Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant, .25 oz, $9.36 retail value
  3. LAQA & CO - Cheeky Lip Crayon in Hubble Brag color, .03 oz, $1.99 retail value
  4. OPI - Venice Collection's A Great Opera-tunity, mini size 1/8 fl oz., $3.48 retail value
  5. St. Tropez - Gradual Tan in Shower Lotion, 1.6 fl oz, $5.75 retail value
This box has a $23.99 retail value, which is pretty good for $10. The smoothing fluid by Rene Furtherer isn't really something I need since my hair is very straight and lays well without help from any products. I really prefer other brands that smell really good. This one doesn't smell good, so that's a deal breaker for me especially for hair products. I love Dr. Brandt's line and I have liked everything I have tried so far, but I wish it wasn't such an expensive brand. I have only purchased samples since they are less expensive that way. This is a nice exfoliant that needs very little of the product to work well. It did make my skin a bit red and I prefer Kate Somerville's version since it makes the skin much smoother and less irritated. I was surprised I liked the LAQA Lip Crayon. It goes on much brighter than it appears, but it's nice. It's buttery in texture and it's not drying which is rare for matte lipsticks. OPI is one my favorite nail polish brands. This color is from the Venice Collection which will come out in the fall and is a pinkish coral, nude crème. It's a lovely subtle color, but since I prefer metallics, I just applied it to my toes. I was disappointed about the consistency of this polish. Normally OPI has a great texture, not too thin or thick, but this one was thick and went on unevenly because it was drying too quickly. I haven't tried the self tanner yet because I can't stand self tanners since they usually are just a mess to work with and stink, stain clothing & sheets and don't apply evenly. Besides I've learned to like my British, Scandinavian super pale skin. This one is interesting though since you rinse it off in the shower, though I wonder if it leaves a residue on your shower!? Anyone try it yet, please comment below. If you subscribe to Birchbox, did you like your August box?
