This is a review of a bakery & cafe located in downtown Winston Salem, North Carolina called Atelier on Trade. I'm always on the lookout for a high quality bakery and when I heard the baker was trained in France, I had to give it a try as soon as possible! Hubby & I visited around 1 pm on a Tuesday and we were the only customers.

When we arrived 90% of the pastries for sale were croissants. The refrigerated case was empty. I was hoping to see more inventory and not mostly croissants. According to their Facebook page they also have eclairs, cheesecake, macarons, pies, quiche, muffins, napoleons, cupcakes, cake, cookies and tarts. Since my husband loves eclairs I was hoping to purchase one of those for him. So we both chose the Cherry, Pistachio & White Chocolate Croissant and the Chocolate Croissant. Just a warning, if you haven't had traditional croissants made the French way you might not be aware that they have less sugar and filling than the American version. Personally I prefer them the French way, I find American bakers put way too much sugar in their baked goods. It's not only unnecessary and more calories, but makes for an overwhelming flavor of sugar making it hard to enjoy the flavor of the other ingredients. The French version is also more flaky and buttery. We really enjoyed the Cherry, Pistachio & White Chocolate croissants. There were little pieces of what seemed to be fresh not frozen cherries inside and it had white chocolate drizzled on top. I didn't taste the pistachio. The chocolate croissants were also very enjoyable and featured little bits of dark chocolate inside. We saved them for breakfast the next day. I find chocolate croissants are best served warm. So I highly recommend taking some home and warming them up ever so slightly in your oven or toaster oven. Just warm them enough to slightly melt the chocolate. I also ordered a Chai Latte only to be told they were out of them. I found that a bit shocking. They have some bottled soft drinks, water & fruit juices in a mini refrigerator you can purchase, but I saw no sign of any diet sodas. There are a few tables inside that you can sit at and the croissants are served on pretty, mismatched china.

We will visit again on a weekend in hopes that they have more inventory then. I recommend you give this bakery a try. Parallel parking is available along Trade Street and the parking meter requires one quarter per hour on weekdays.
