This is a review of our 7th delivery from an organic meal kit subscription box called Green Chef. This week we gave two recipes five out of five stars and one recipe two stars. Calories ranged from 480 to 790 and preparation time ranged from thirty to forty-five. Two recipes were gluten free and one was a low calorie vegetarian dinner. Vegetarian meals cost $10.49, Omnivore cost $11.99, Vegan cost $11.99, Carnivore cost $13.49, Gluten Free cost $13.49 and Paleo cost $14.99. That's for the two person plan, for the family plan (four people) the Omnivore meals cost $11.99 and the Carnivore meals cost $12.99 per meal. Keep in mind healthier organic ingredients are more expensive and they send you generous portions that often have leftovers.
Spaghetti Squash Alfredo, Red Pepper Sauce, Tomatoes & Spinach & Pistachios
I did it again, I convinced Hubby that vegetarian meals can be scrumptious! He gave this dish five out of five stars and I agreed. He's eating his words that he made when we first met when he said "you will never get me to eat vegetarian". Funny how things change! This gets super high marks since it was so delicious yet low in calories and filling. 480 calories for dinner is low in calories yet it doesn't taste like diet food. Spaghetti squash is fun to work with since it looks solid until you take a fork to it after it's baked and it then looks just like spaghetti. Next time you see spaghetti squash in your market, grab one and take it home. Roast it in the oven at 425 degrees. Before putting it in the oven, cut it in half, scrape out the seeds with a spoon, drizzle the inside with olive oil, salt and pepper. Place it cut side down on a baking sheet and roast for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through. It's a tasty & healthy fall vegetable. The parmesan fracas are also super easy to make. Just take some shredded parmesan cheese and make four piles on a baking sheet. Gently flatten, bake 5-7 minutes at 425 degrees. When they cool they will be crisp so they are a nice substitution for toast. The sauce was so fabulous! It was made with butter, onions, milk, roasted red pepper purée (roasted red peppers, water, salt). They prepped the purée, sliced the onions and minced the garlic for us saving us time. This recipe is gluten free, low calorie and it took about forty-five minutes to prepare.
Chicken Katsu, Rice & Sesame Seeds, Cucumber Slaw & Herbs
Once I saw they were offering a Chicken Katsu recipe I had to order since it's one of my favorite dishes. Hubby gave this one five out of five stars and since I'm more picky I gave it four stars. The red miso tonkatsu sauce should not have been poured over the chicken since it softened the crisp breadcrumb topping. It should have been a dipping sauce instead. It was tasty and appreciate that they made it for us. They also marinated the chicken, diced the red onion, minced the ginger and garlic, shredded the cabbage and cut the carrots for us saving us time. The slaw was tasty, but it needed some dressing, so I used some of the tonkatsu sauce. The basmati rice with sesame seeds, red onions, ginger and garlic was delicious. This recipe was lower in calories than I would have guessed since it was such a large portion. It came in at 610 calories and it took longer than the thirty-five minutes indicated. We had enough slaw left for a light lunch, but ate all of the chicken.
Beef Mole Chili, Zucchini, Peppers, Carrots, Tomatoes & Cornbread
This recipe looked so delicious, but we didn't care for it due to the use of cocoa and espresso powder. It would have been tasty if they had left it out, we felt that it just didn't go well with the other ingredients. We drained the sauce so that there was less of the cocoa and espresso flavor. I've never met cornbread I didn't like until this recipe. It didn't have enough salt and it just wasn't tasty. I'm not sure where they went wrong. I couldn't taste any rosemary and we love rosemary in our breads. It took longer than the thirty minutes indicated and it 's a gluten free recipe with 790 calories. It was a very generous portion with enough leftovers for lunch.
Well there you have it, my latest review of Green Chef. Have you given Green Chef a try yet? If not, what's keeping you from giving it a try? I really like that all of the ingredients arrive in great shape, they use enough ice packs to keep even seafood cold enough and they prep some vegetables, spices, marinades and sauces in advance and most of the time the recipes are four or five out of five stars. I highly recommend this subscription box! It's currently my 2nd favorite with Sun Basket being number one.
